Festive, patriotic or just plain summery. This classic colour combination is a must for warmer weather, and sure to put you in a good mood!
Not sure what the situation is at your city, but here, the immunization is under way, and outdoor gatherings are not just a dream, but something we might be able to do pretty darn soon!
End of May/Memorial Day has always been the kick off to backyard entertaining. Weather is starting to be warmer, the sun is showing up more and everybody is generally in a better mood.
While we wait for the green light to do gatherings, I continue to have fun in dressing up the table for my little family.
Here are 6 core tips for a festive table setting:
1. SET THE TONE WITH COLOR
The colors you choose set the mood for your table so consider the tableware you plan on using for the event. Layer classic festive colors like whites , blues and reds. Bright hues are excellent choices for contemporary tabletop designs so do not be afraid to mix and match different dinnerware, linen and accent colors and patterns.
2. MIXING PATTERNS CREATE AN INTERESTING SETTING
Mixing different patterns to your tabletop pieces draws in the eye and create visual interest. Choose a different pattern for at least 2 of your items. Tablecloth, plates (specially appealing when you mix and match your dishes), napkins, napkin rings. Just make sure to mix patterns in different sizes to avoid a clash.
3. VERSATILE TABLEWARE & FLATWARE ARE KEY
When choosing dishes and glassware, you may want to go for versatile items that work well for a number of table settings. You can always go crazy with the other elements of your table. Use flatware as your guide if you want to go formal or more casual. A formal place setting uses more flatware pieces, as each course and dish type has its own utensils, arranged on either side of the plate. Place utensils for the first courses on the outside and the flatware for later courses closer to the plate. If you prefer a less formal setting, a simple fork, knife and spoon setting is appropriate.
4. ELEMENTS FROM NATURE FOR AN INVITING SETTING
A few freshly cut flowers arranged in a vase are always a good idea. Even artificial flowers can do the trick. For a more rustic look, chose pinecones and chestnuts for example. Add a festive flair to your setting with evergreen centrepieces or twigs. Single flowers in small vases can help accent your contemporary tabletop. Shells and stones can add a nautical touch.
