6 Modern Manners To Live By at the Table

After last week's post with Armine "Ms Modern Manners", I couldn't help but wonder, what would be the new modern manners at the table in this day and age?

Table manners seem like a thing of the past, but they're not. Manners are actually more important now than ever before. Whether you are hosting your own event or going to someone else's, there is always an opportunity to display good table manners. Here are some modern-day table manners that will allow you to navigate any social situation with ease and avoid annoying people at the table!

6 Modern Table Manners To Live By

    1. Put your smart device away
As people get so used to having some sort of smart device with them ALL.THE.TIME., it gets harder and harder to resist peeking at it or scroll social media feeds. Try to resist the urge and give your full attention to the people at the table. Im sure it will be noticed and appreciated! Otherwise you just give the signal that you are bored and not interested in the present company. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. will never be out of style!

    2. Be Polite: Use the magic words!
"Thank You", "Please", "You are welcome". These aren't just for kids. Being grateful for a meal done for you is important and Im sure very appreciated by the host. As well as saying "Please" if you need something. Try to avoid responding with "No Problem", as it doesn't have the same connotation as "You are welcome" or "My pleasure".

    3. Show up clean and dress appropriately
Of course depending on the formality of the event will give you the cue to the dress code. However, if you put some effort to at least show up in clean, unwrinkled clothes will give the signal that you care. And please... don’t attend to hygiene at the table.

    4. Chew with your mouth closed
      I think I don't have to explain this one further {wink emoji}.

    5. Watch your posture
According to Emily Post: "Avoid slouching and don’t place your elbows on the table while eating (though it is okay to prop your elbows on the table while conversing between courses, and always has been, even in Emily’s day)". Sit up straight! Otherwise you will look lazy, disinterested and disrespectful towards the others at the table.

    6. Selfies and food photos
Im sure there are moments when is appropriate to take a photo of your food or take a photo of the people to remember the special occasion. But for the love of all thats holy... don't photograph every.single.thing or take a selfie every 10 mins. Honestly, you don't have to post it all on social media.

The next time you're at a dinner party (or hosting your own), try to remember these modern-day table manners. You'll be surprised by how well you will be regarded!
