A couple of weeks ago I decided I wanted to decortae some fun pumpkins. Not the regular painted one, but something more elegant and fun. Then I discovered the art of decorating with paper napkins. My mind was blown! Endless ideas, from chinoiserie pumpkins to gingham to... you name it!
I have been wanting to introduce some of my Mexican traditions to my girls, so I made an altar this year to honour my grandparents. The altar decorating is a highly popular mexican culture tradition. I already had the idea of making a halloween tablescape so then the plan changed to a halloween/dia de muertos theme, and it only made sense to decorate the pumpkins with Dia de los Muertos napkins.
First thing to do was to find the skull napkins. Amazon to the rescue! Then on to find the pumpkins to the dollar store, my go-to place first to try and find all what I need without breaking the bank. I bought an assortment of pumpkins in all kins of shapes, materials and sizes.
Then the fun began! Here's a step-by-step on how to decorate your pumpkins with paper napkins:
1.- PREPARE THE GLUE
I used regular school white glue. To prepare: 1 part glue, 1 part water. Whisk until combined.
2- SEPARATE THE NAPKIN PAPER
Carefully separate the white backing from the patterned part of the napkin.
3- CUT A SMALL HOLE
Using scissors, cut a small hole to insert the top of the pumpkin and place the napkin in it.
4- START APPLYING THE GLUE
With an art brush, start applying the glue on the pumpkin and pat gently the napkin to glue it. Keep repeating until the entirety is covered. You can cut pieces and glue collage style to cover the blank spaces. There is no right and wrong! Your piece of art will end up looking fabulous even with collage-style parts.
5- LET DRY
Let it dry and enjoy your new pieces of decor!
Please make sure to share your pics with me if you decide to try it. We LOVE to hear and see what you come up with!
